Senate Passes $1.1 Trillion Omnibus Spending Bill: Here Are the 17 GOP Senators Who Helped Pass It
Remember the names on this list when it is time for you to vote!
The Democrat-controlled Senate voted 72-26 Thursday to pass a $1.1 trillion “omnibus” spending bill to keep government operations funded until Sept. 30.
All 26 “nay” votes came from Republicans. Two Republicans, Sens. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.) and Tom Coburn (Okla.), did not vote.

Having already passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, the bill now heads to President Barack Obama’s desk for final approval.
The House passed the bill Wednesday with an overwhelming 359-67, bipartisan majority.
The 1,582-page bill funds every agency
of government, pairing increases for NASA and Army Corps of Engineers
construction projects with cuts to the Internal Revenue Service and
foreign aid. It pays for implementation of Obama’s health care law.
Obama: I’ll Act Alone Without Congress If They Don’t Pass Certain Legislation
No regard of the Office of President and his oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. This man needs to be Impeached
President Barack Obama said in his
weekly address Saturday that he will move forward and act alone without
Congress on certain issues if he can’t gain the legislative body’s
cooperation.
“[I] want to work with Congress this
year on proven ways to create jobs, like building infrastructure and
fixing our broken immigration system,” he said. “Where Congress isn’t
acting, I’ll act on my own to put opportunity within reach for anyone
who’s willing to work for it.”
“I firmly believe that this can be a
breakthrough year for America. But to make that happen, we’re gonna
have to act – to create good jobs that pay good wages, and to offer more
Americans a fair shot to get ahead,” he concluded his address saying.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo: Some Conservatives ‘Have No Place in the State of New York’

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a
radio interview that if “extreme conservatives” are “right-to-life,
pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay,” then “they have no place in the state of
New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.”
Cuomo made his statements during a WCNY radio interview with Susan Arbetter on “The Capitol Pressroom” Friday morning, noted the “Capitol Confidential”
of the Times Union in Albany. The context of Cuomo’s statement is what
he sees as a schism between moderate and “extreme conservative”
Republicans in New York state and around the country:
“Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and if they are the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.”

Cuomo added that “moderate Republicans
have a place in this state” and noted that he can work with moderate
Republicans, as they’ve consistently passed his agenda.
Cuomo also broke down more of his main
issues with so-called “extreme” conservatives, urging them to “figure
out if your extreme conservative philosophy can survive in this state
and the answer is no.”
Federal Court: Convicted Murderer Can Get Taxpayer-Funded Sex Change Because of U.S. Constitution

A federal appeals court on Friday
upheld a ruling that said the state must provide a taxpayer-funded sex
change for a convicted Massachusetts murderer as part of the
individual’s constitutional rights.

In a 2-1 ruling, the court noted that
the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled courts “must not shrink from their
obligation to enforce the constitutional rights of all persons,
including prisoners,” according to the Boston Globe.
“And receiving medically necessary
treatment is one of those rights, even if that treatment strikes some as
odd or unorthodox,” the court reportedly said.

The 80-page decision would pave the way
for Michelle Kosilek to receive the first court-ordered, state-funded
sex change for a U.S. prisoner.
According to the Boston Globe, the Department of Correction said it is working to “determine next steps.”
Kosilek was named “Robert” when convicted of murdering his wife, Cheryl McCaul, in 1990, the Associated Press reported.
After prison officials declined to provide a sex reassignment
surgery, Kosilek sued the Department of Correction and a federal judge
later ruled in 2012 the surgery was the “only adequate treatment” for
the gender identity disorder Kosilek purportedly suffered from.
The Associated Press reported that prison officials have said they are worried about Kosilek’s safety, should a surgery take place.
100% Increase in Previously-Deported Sex Offenders Illegally Returning from Mexico

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) is reporting that one sector of the U.S./Mexico border has seen a 100% increase in the number of illegal aliens, previously deported for criminal sexual offenses, apprehended while attempting to illegally re-enter the United States.
The comparison is between Fiscal Year 2013 and Fiscal Year 2014.The Del Rio Border Patrol sector, one of nine in total that exist along the U.S./Mexico border, is one of the less active sectors, and the CBP did not release information from the more active sectors. The sector, however, has seen eight previously-deported sex offenders in Fiscal Year 2014 alone, which began on October 1, 2013. The sector saw a total of sixteen previously deported sex offenders in the entire Fiscal Year 2013.
These numbers only represent the number of illegal alien sex offenders who are actually caught by Border Patrol agents, and the numbers do not represent the numbers who do not get caught — a number that is likely much higher. Further, these numbers are from one of nine sectors, and that the Del Rio sector is not as active with illegal crossings as are others; the numbers from all nine sectors are likely much higher.
The most recent case involves an illegal alien from Guatemala who was previously convicted in the U.S. of “Criminal Sexual Conduct- 2nd Degree-Sexual Contact” while he was illegally in the U.S previously. He was deported, then attempted his return. The illegal alien sex offender, Jose Bernal Barrientos-Mayorga, was referred to in a CBP press release as an “undocumented immigrant” rather than the legal term.
These cases echo another recent egregious situation where an illegal alien illegally entered the U.S., was deported, came back and sexually assaulted a woman in Houston, Texas, was deported again after prison, and then came right back illegally. In that case, the sex offender was simply set to be deported again by U.S. authorities.

Dems Push Bill to Read Detained Illegal Immigrants Rights
On Friday, Democratic Representatives Bill Foster of Illinois and Ted Deutch of Florida put forward a bill that would force the federal government to read detained illegal immigrants their rights. Detention centers do not have the obligation to read detainees their rights.
The bill would create an Office of Legal Access Programs designed to help inform illegal immigrants. Foster called the current system an “egregious violation of a person’s most basic rights, it is a waste of time and taxpayer dollars when courts are not able to proceed,” adding, “Providing information on legal rights is fundamental to our democracy and should not be optional.” The Department of Justice would force all centers to have legal origination programs in both English and five other languages.
Under federal law, agents are not obligated to read illegal immigrants detained for deportation their rights. Illegal immigrants also do not have a right to a taxpayer-provided lawyer for deportation proceedings.
Florida Universities Change Policies to Allow Guns on Campus

Florida universities have begun complying with the First District Court of Appeals' ruling that "state universities cannot bar students from storing guns in their cars while on campus."
On December 11th, CBS Miami reported that the 15-member court ruled 12 to 3 to strike down the ban in order to protect students' right to have a gun in their cars for purposes of self-defense.The successful suit was filed by Florida Carry Inc.
Now, according to the Orlando Sentinel, the University of North Florida, Florida State University, and the University of South Florida have changed their policies to allow students to store firearms in their vehicles.
In addition, the University of Central Florida "is updating its policy" to comply with the ruling, and Florida International University has put changes before the board of trustees for approval.
On January 10th, Breitbart News reported that Florida Carry Inc. has filed a follow-up suit against the University of Florida because that school has yet to fully comply with the court's ruling.
Common Core Reading Comprehension Assignment Pushes Global Warming
A Common Core-aligned elementary school homework assignment in a Jefferson County, Colorado school district tells children that by 2512, Kansas will be an oceanfront state, that the “Smokey” Mountains [sic] will become the “Smokey” Islands [sic], and that a sharp decline in the human population will take place, all due to man-made global warming.
According to Complete Colorado, the assignment, labeled as “Common Core Comprehension Grade 5,” given at the Fremont Elementary School, is identified as a science fiction exercise in reading comprehension, but in “no part of the material, including a sheet of follow-up questions” is there “any critical thinking ‘pushback’ against the narrative provided in the exercise.”
The observation raises an irony, given that proponents of Common Core state that one of the main features of the new standards is that they encourage “critical thinking” over mere memorization of facts.
Priscilla Straughn, Executive Director of Educational Research and Design at Jefferson County Public Schools, told Complete Colorado, “We have district policy around controversial materials we expect all schools to follow.”
However, when asked whether global warming was a “controversial” topic, Straughn reportedly responded, “I think the topic of global warming would be considered controversial. That was not the intent of this assignment. This assignment was around comprehension, with the science fiction genre.”
According to the report, a school district official said that the workbook containing the assignment was purchased individually by the classroom teacher without the use of district funds.
The assignment, published by Newmark Learning in a Common Core-aligned reading comprehension workbook, has the premise that a student from the year 2512, “Gif,” must create a hologram image of a student from the 21st century. Upon his arrival, the hologram student is shocked to see an oceanfront Kansas, and the explanation given by “Gif,” the “real” student from the future, is:
Well, by the early 21st century, people knew that the massive use of fossil fuel was heating up the planet. But people didn’t stop their destructive lifestyles. They just kept using up Earth’s resources. The ice sheets melted, and Earth’s crust shifted. Volcanic pressure burst through in places that never had volcanoes.“Gif” adds, “In 2130, the oceans began to rise over farmland and cities. In 300 years, most of the eastern United States was covered with water. All that remains are the Smokey [sic] Islands – formerly the Smokey [sic] Mountains.”
The reading comprehension questions following the story include:
- What caused all the problems on Earth?
- What were the Smokey [sic] Islands before?
- How could the problems have been avoided?
